The type of candle you choose not only affects the atmosphere in your home, but also your health and the environment. That's why it's advisable to choose candles that are made from natural ingredients and do not contain harmful chemical additives.

The safest candles are those made from natural ingredients and do not contain chemical additives that can release toxins when burned. The safest types of candles:

1. Beeswax Candles : These candles are 100% natural and produce a clean burn. At Mialife we love beeswax, an eco-friendly option that releases a subtle natural honey aroma when burned and produces less smoke. In addition, these candles emit negative ions that help purify the air.

2. Soy Wax Candles : Soy wax is a renewable, biodegradable, and safer option than traditional paraffin candles. Soy candles burn slower, which means they last longer, and they release less soot and chemicals into the air.

3. Coconut Wax Candles : These candles are a relatively new and very environmentally friendly option. Coconut wax burns cleanly and has a lower melting point, allowing for a slower, longer burn.

4. Sustainable Palm Wax Candles : While palm wax can be controversial due to deforestation, there are certified sustainable options that ensure responsible production. These candles also produce a clean, long-lasting burn.

5. Rapeseed (Canola) Wax Candles : Rapeseed wax, derived from canola oil, is another plant-based option that burns cleanly and is biodegradable. Like soy candles, they are a good alternative to paraffin candles.

Things to Avoid

Paraffin Candles : These are made from a petroleum byproduct and when burned can release harmful chemicals, such as benzene and toluene, which are carcinogenic.

Candles with Synthetic Fragrances and Dyes : Many artificial dyes and fragrances can release volatile chemicals when burned, which can be harmful to respiratory health.

Lead-Cored Wicks : Although banned in many places, some inexpensive candles may have lead-cored wicks, which release lead into the air when burned. It's best to opt for candles with cotton or wooden wicks.

When choosing candles, look for those that are labeled “natural,” “additive-free,” or “synthetic fragrance-free,” and check the ingredients to make sure they are safe for your health.
